Person sitting in Hero Pose with knees bent, feet beside the hips and an upright spine.

Hero Pose

Virasana

Hero Pose is a kneeling seat with the feet beside the hips rather than under them. It can be a steady place for breathing and upright sitting, but many people need height under the sitting bones to make it comfortable for the knees, ankles or feet.

Person practising supported Headstand with forearms grounded and legs extended vertically.

Headstand

Sirsasana

Headstand is a full inversion that asks for shoulder support, trunk control and careful balance. It is usually safer to build it gradually than to kick into it.

Head-to-Knee Pose

Janu Sirsasana

Head-to-Knee Pose is a one-legged seated forward bend that combines a hamstring stretch on the straight leg with a gentler opening through the inner thigh and hip of the bent leg. The shape works best when you think of length first and depth second.

Person lying on the back in Happy Baby Pose holding the feet with knees bent wide and shins upright.

Happy Baby Pose

Ananda Balasana

Happy Baby Pose is a gentle supine hip opener that lets the lower back settle into the floor while the thighs draw toward the ribs. It is often used near the end of practice or after stronger standing and backbending work.

Person balancing in Handstand with straight arms and legs stacked over the shoulders.

Handstand

Adho Mukha Vrksasana

Handstand is a strong, balance-heavy inversion that asks for organised shoulders, active hands and a steady centre. For many people it is best approached progressively, often first with wall support.

Side view of Hands Under Feet Pose with palms under the soles in a standing forward fold.

Hands Under Feet Pose

Padahastasana

Hands Under Feet Pose is a standing forward fold where the palms slide under the soles of the feet. The hand placement changes the fold by bringing more contact through the feet and a clearer bend at the hips, but it does not need to be forced.

Person in Half Standing Forward Fold seen from the side with a long spine, hands supported below, and knees softly bent.

Half Standing Forward Fold

Ardha Uttanasana

Half Standing Forward Fold is a lifted version of a forward fold where the spine lengthens forward instead of dropping down. It is often used in sun salutations and standing sequences to organise the back body, wake up the legs, and give you a clearer sense of hinging from the hips.

Side view of Half Splits Pose with one knee down and the front leg extended.

Half Splits Pose

Ardha Hanumanasana

Half Splits is a kneeling hamstring stretch with one leg extended forward and the hips moving back. It can be quite direct, so a smaller range often feels clearer and steadier than trying to fold deeply.

Person practising Half Moon Pose with one hand reaching down and the top leg lifted parallel to the floor.

Half Moon Pose

Ardha Chandrasana

Half Moon Pose is a standing balance with one leg grounded and the other reaching long behind. It asks for ankle stability, hip control and a clear sense of length through the whole body more than a high lifted leg.

Person seated in Half Lotus Pose with one foot resting on the opposite thigh and spine upright.

Half Lotus Pose

Ardha Padmasana

Half Lotus Pose is a seated hip-opening posture with one foot placed high on the opposite thigh and the other leg folded underneath or in front. It asks for comfortable external rotation at the hip, while the knee and ankle need to stay quiet and well supported.
